Srinivasa Ramanujan a mathematician par excellence was born toady, 22nd December in 1887 in the Madras Province (present day Tamil Nadu).He is widely believed to be the greatest mathematician of the 20th Century. Srinivasa Ramanujan made significant contribution to the analytical theory of numbers and worked on elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series.
India Post has issued three commemorative stamps and one special day cover in honour of Srinivasa Ramanujan. One commemorative stamp was issued in 1962 (denomination Naye Paise 15), one to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan in 2011 (denomination Rs. 5), and one to honour the legendary mathematician on the National Mathematics Day in 2010 (denomination Rs. 5). A special day cover to commemorate the 37th International Mathematical Olympiad was issued with a portrait of Srinivasa Ramanujan in 1996.
