Shakespeare on England’s 2016 Silver £50 Coin

2016-10-12 Wed

Money has always played a major role in the works of William Shakespeare, which is why The Royal Mint is going to feature the brilliant playwright on a Brilliant Uncirculated .999 fine silver £50 coin that will be sold for its face value. The coin will also mark the 400th death anniversary of the legend.

The halfpenny has been a part of many plays like the Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice and the Merry Wives of Windsor. Even the one-time master William Hastings had a role in Henry VI, and in Richard III Shakespeare speaks about his death.

The reverse features theatre’s comedy and tragedy masks inspired from a black and white engraving of Shakespeare. The obverse features the common portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

The mintage limit of the 31 grams coin is 15,000 pieces and would come in a colourful cardboard pack.
