Austria Uses Glow-in-the-dark Technology on Coins
2016-10-07 Fri
For the first time ever, Austria’s latest 12-coin series celebrating nocturnal species named the Colourful Creatures will adopt the glow-in-the-dark technology. The first coin depicting a bat was issued on 5th October. A new coin will be released in three months for the next three years. The motifs of the animals depicted on the coins will glow in the dark. A Tiger, crocodile, kingfisher and wolf will be featured on 2017 coins. A parrot, shark, owl and frog will be depicted on 2018 coins. A turtle, otter and crayfish will be featured on 2019 coins. These €3 coins would also be Austria’s first coins of that denomination. Officials believe that the kids would totally love having these coins in their collection apart from others. They are also expecting a big demand. A common reverse design celebrates all 12 animals in the series. The mintage limit for each of the copper-nickel 16 grams coin is 50,000 pieces.
