Earliest Auction Catalogue Photo to be Auctioned

A photo of a plaster cast of a 1804 Draped Bust dollar’s obverse was first published in an 1874 auction catalogue. The coin now rests in the Durham Western Heritage Museum in Omaha, Neb. The online Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers Sale on 21st October is going to offer the earliest known publication of photos of two different 1804 Draped Bust dollars that were featured on the 19th century auction catalogues from the United States and Germany.Edward Cogan’s “Catalogue Of A Very Rare And Valuable Assortment Of Coins And Medals, In Gold, Silver And Copper, The Property Of E. Harrison Sanford, Esq.” features the earliest known photograph of an 1804 Draped Bust dollar’s obverse and was sold on 27th November 1874.
The Cogan catalogue of the 1884 Sanford sale is described as “internally fine” and had an estimate of $1,000.
