Bactrian camel on Kushan coin

2016-10-04 Tue

On the World Animal Day let's see some interesting Bactrian camels on coins!

The double humped Bactrian camel is native to Central Asia and has played an integral part in drawing caravans on the Silk route. Adapted to the cold weather, this type of camel is found only in the historic region of Bactria, hence the name. And maybe that's the reason this animal is only depicted on the coins of the North Western ruling dynasties of India.

The earliest coins issued by Kushan rulers Kujula Kaphises and Vima Takto in copper generally bear a bull on one side and a double-humped Bactrian camel on the other. It probably reflects the nomadic habits of Kushans. All these coins were bilingual having Greek legends on the obverse and Kharosthi on the reverse. The Kushan coins represent a curious blending of nationalities and creeds.

We don't think any other ruler or dynasty in India except the Indo-Scythians used this animal on their coins. So these particular coins with Bactrian camel on them are very interesting as it makes us curious to dig into further research.

As interesting as these animals are on coins, they are in great danger and should be protected and preserved! So on this World Animal Day, which was started to protect animal rights and welfare, let's pledge to appreciate our relationship with animals and learn to share our planet.
