The illustrated year was 1674; The Great Maratha maharaja was coroneted as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja at Raigarh. On 6th June 1674, Shivaji's coronation ceremony was performed according to the shastras by Gaga Bhatta, of Varanasi, a master of the four Vedas. 800 gold Hons were showered on him.The coins were minted with the name “Shri Raja Shiva” on obverse and “Chhatrapati” on reverse. Shivaji Maharaja inscribed his coins in Devanagari, to withstand against Mughal Empire. The coins showered on him held political importance. Sadly, after two centuries, only a few remnants of such fine coins are available today as most of them are melted down.
Last year, one of the fine minted gold Hon coins surfaced in Todywalla Auction. The gold Hon is considered as extremely rare and the maximum listed price was 15 Lakh rupees. However, the bid continued till an astonishing amount and it was sold for 33 Lakhs.
Have you looked around? Even you can stumble upon such rarity.
