Waiting for the Turtle Coin

2016-10-03 Mon

The turtle designs by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee for the 2017 and 2018 America the Beautiful quarter dollars have been the most loved and talked about designs.

The U.S. Mint’s engraving staff, along with outside artists in the Artistic Infusion Program, produce proposed designs. They are submitted to the CCAC and the Commission of Fine Arts. Recommendations on the designs are given to the U.S. Treasury and the final decision is made.

The selections for the quarter designs were made by the CCAC on 8th October 2015. Everyone agreed that the turtle designs are the best out of all the 56 quarters in the series. A softshell turtle walking towards the kayaker is depicted on the design. The CFA recommended the Alley Mill design instead of the turtle design. The final designs had the Alley Mill design and not the turtle designs on 1st September 2016.

The CCAC chose the designs for the 2018 ATB quarter on 27th June 2016. The Cumberland Island National Seashore quarter dollar featuring a sea turtle swimming along the Cumberland Island was everyone’s favourite. The CFA but selected a design that included a snowy egret.

One would have to wait and watch if the 2016 designs would feature the beautiful turtles.
