Australians Propose to Feature 'Crocodile Hunter' on Currency Notes

2016-09-27 Tue

A special petition has been initiated which has been already signed by over 20,000 Australians asking for conservationist Steve Irwin’s image to be to featured on the country's currency.

Irwin will always be remembered for his brave stunts with life-threatening animals. He passed away at the age of 44 in 2006 when a stingray stabbed at him several times while filming an underwater documentary titled Ocean's Deadliest on the Great Barrier Reef in far north Queensland.

Organisers of the petition are also going online to promote their petition requests. The Royal Australian Mint has gone ahead and asked supporters to submit a written proposal to have Irwin's face featured on a commemorative coin. A written proposal would be required to change the existing policy of not featuring anybody other than Queen Elizabeth II or members of the British Royal Family.

In certain special cases, other individuals can also featured on coins but celebrating the birth anniversary or significant historic event in the life of that person.
