Story of a Military Medal Which Survived a Terrorist Attack
2016-09-13 Tue
Ed is an Army colonel who works in the Pentagon and is a member of the Special Operations/Combating Terrorism team. He has a coin, placed in this workspace, which has the inscription “Combating Terrorism” along with the depiction of a flying eagle all ready to attack its prey. The reverse depicts the inscription “Department of Defence, United States of America”.The medal is basically a token of the unit a soldier belongs to and portrays their loyalty to each other. A soldier who doesn’t have this coin at a bar in a tavern or a military base would have to pay for the drinks.
Ed worked on the coin’s design for six months and finally got it approved by the entire team and produced from a private Mint.
On 11th September 2001, terrorists attacked Pentagon with a passenger jet and Ed’s office was completely destroyed. Ed was off for a week-long vacation when the attack took place and tried hard to find the coin after he came back. He finally was relieved when he found the coin and quickly ordered 500 more.
The coin which survived the terrorist attack, without the slightest of damage, in a way, stands for the entire Unit’s motto of combating terrorism.
