Gandabherunda is a mythical bird with immense power, capable of lifting an elephant with its beak and claws.The image of Gandabherunda is very prominent in Indian history, symbolizing power and strength.The Gandabherunda was adopted by the Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore as the Royal emblem. Vijaynagar Empire king Achyutaraya issued coins featuring Gandabherunda.
This Gold half pagoda was issued by Vijayanagar Emperor Achyutaraya. The obverse features the image of Gandabherunda moving to left; profile of the bird is presented, carrying an elephant in each of its two beaks and two claws. The reverse is inscribed with the Devanagari legend Sri pra/tapa Chyuta/raya in three lines.
