On This Day in 1919, Pu.La.Deshpande, a colossal authority in the world of Marathi literature, art, and culture was born.Although being a versatile writer he was widely known for his humor and witty satire on the real-life issues of a common man.
He was honored with the Padma Shri Award in 1966 and the Padma Bhushan Award in 1990 for his contribution to Marathi literature. In addition, he received the Punyabhushan Award in 1993. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1963 and was awarded a fellowship for the same in 1974.
The Department of #Posts issued a multicolored #commemorative stamp with Deshpande's portrait on his 2nd death anniversary. It also has a picture of him in the role of Sant Tukaram from his play 'Tuka Mhane Ata' in the background.
