COPPER COIN OF SIRI SATAKARNI

The Satavahana dynasty also known as Andhrabhrityas in the Puranas ruled the vast part of India from 2nd century BCE till 2nd century CE. Siri Satakarni or Satakarni I was the third king of this dynasty. According to the Naneghat inscription, Siri Satakarni performed the A?vamedha sacrifice twice to proclaim his sovereignty.This ‘Elephant’ type copper coin issued by Siri Satakarni is from the Lower Narmada Valley. The weight of this copper coin is 9.56g. The obverse features an elephant with its trunk raised facing left and a Brahmi legend “…raño Siri (Sa)ti(sa).” On the reverse, it features Ujjain symbol with one orb modified as a Nandipada; counterstruck by a motif of lion jumping to the right.
This coin was sold for INR 57500 at the Oswal Antiques held in Mumbai on 8th October 2023.
