Commemorative Coins of Brihadeeswara Temple

Brihadeeshwara Temple or Tanjore Temple I Tamil Nadu is one of the largest temples in India, built by Raja Raja Chola I in 1010 CE. It is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in a Chola architectural style.In 2010, Rs. 5 commemorative coins were issued by the Government of India’s SPMCIL for general circulation to celebrate the 1000 years of Brihadeeshwara Temple. These coins were minted in the alloy of Nickel Brass (75% Copper + 20% Zinc + 5% Nickel).
A coin of Rs. 1000 was also issued in 2010 by the Government of India’s SPMCIL in a limited edition to commemorate the same event. These coins were minted with 80% silver content and 20% copper. It was a Non-Circulative Legal Tender (NCLT).
This proof set of Rs. 5 and Rs.1000 within the original packaging was sold for Rs. 7000 in an electronic auction on 28 May 2023.
