Remembering Mannathu Padmanabha Pillai on his Birth Anniversary

Mannathu Padmanabha Pillar was the founder of the Nair Service Society. He was a great social reformer and freedom fighter from the Southwestern state of Kerala.

Mannathu Padmanabha was born on January 02, 1878 to Easwaran Namboothiri of Nilavana Illam and Mannathu Parvathy Amma. He began his career as a teacher at Government Primary School in 1893. Later, in 1905 he changed his profession and started practising law in the Magistrate's Courts.

He established the Nair Service Society on October 31, 1914. His main ambition was the upliftment of the status of the Nair Community. In 1915, he gave up his law practice and became the president of the Nair Service Society.

The Government of India has honoured him with the title 'Bharata Kesari', and he also received Padma Bhushan in 1966.

The commemorative stamp on Mannathu Padmanabha Pillar was issued in 1989 to commemorate him and his work.
