The Chauri Chaura incident occurred on 4th February 1922 in the district of Gorakhpur, when a large group of protesters who were participating in the Non-cooperation movement clashed with the police, who opened fire on them.

In retaliation, the angry protesters set the police station ablaze. Mahatma Gandhi who was a stern supporter of non-violence took back the Non-cooperation movement at the National level on 12th February 1922 as a direct result of this tragedy.

The "Shaheed Smarak" which is located in Chauri Chaura reminds us of the incident and the, sacrifice of the people for the independence of our country. India Posts released a stamp at the beginning of the centenary year of the Chauri Chaura movement.
