This silver karshapana was issued by Matsya Janapada during the ancient period in India. The Matsya Janapada was founded by Virata and the capital of this kingdom was Viratanagari.The Matsya Janapada was one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas of India. In Sanskrit the meaning of the word Matsya is Fish. The reference to Matsya Janapada is found in the Buddhist text, Anguttara Nikaya.
