Commemorative Stamp of Blackbeard

Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, was an English pirate. He was born in the year 1680. He voyaged around the eastern coast of the North American colonies of Britain and the West Indies. He worked as a sailor on ships during Queen Anne’s War. Later, he settled on the Bahamian island, the base for Captain Benjamin Hornigold. Around 1716, Teach joined his crew and gave the command of a stoop. A fleet of two ships was added, which increased their numbers.

Teach captured La Concorde, a French slave ship and renamed it Queen Anne’s Revenge. He equipped her with 300 men and 40 guns. Teach became a renowned pirate known as Blackbeard for his thick black beard. He later parted ways with, Bonnet settled in Bath town in North California and accepted a royal pardon there. He was back to the waters soon, where he attracted Alexander Spotswood’s attention, the governor of Virginia. On 22nd November 1718, Teach and his men were killed by Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his force of sailors.

The above-given stamp is a commemorative stamp of Blackbeard or Edward Teach. This multicolour stamp was issued on 6th February 1987 by the country of Bahamas. The face value of this stamp is 40 Bahamian cents.
