Commemorative Stamp of Francisco Pizarro

Francisco Pizarro Gonzalez, born in Trujillo on March 16, 1478, was a Spanish conquistador, and is known for his expeditions which led to the Spanish conquest of Peru.

Pizarro accompanied Vasco Nunez de Balboa to the Gulf of Uraba. They crossed the Isthmus of Panama, where they became the first Europeans to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. He then served as the Mayor of the newly founded Panama City for a few years and undertook two failed expeditions to Peru. The first expedition took place on 14th November 1524 that turned out to be a failure. However, in 1529 led a campaign to conquer Peru, and this expedition was successful. Pizarro founded the first Spanish settlement in Peru. He was assassinated in 1541, falling a victim to political power struggles.

The above-given stamp is the commemorative stamp in memory of Pizarro. This stamp was issued by famous Spain on the 14th of October in the year 1964.
