Pitalkhora: Yaksha Commemorative Stamp

The Pitalkhora is an archaeological site located in Kannad, Maharashtra, in Aurangabad, on the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, in the Satamala Range. The Pitalkhora consist of 14 rock-cut caves of various types of basalt rock, and some of the caves have deteriorated. Amongst all the sculptures in Pitalkhora, the statue of Yaksha is one of the most exciting sculptures. The mention of Yaksha, is found in religious scriptures and stories of all the religions that originated in India. According to Buddhist literature, Yaksha is a beneficent god, who protects the righteous and rules from Capital ‘Alaka’ or ‘Alakananda’. He is represented as a human form; the Buddhist rock-cut mountain display Yaksha, both sides of the entrance of a monastery, or Chaitya, commonly known as Drawpala.Latest News
