2022-10-18 Tue

Anacopia Fortress is a military structure constructed between the second and fourth centuries. The site is approximately 450 x 150 meters extended, located on a mile or so island at the top of the Iverian Mountain. The Fortress is the most complete; surviving building of ancient Anacopia, the former capital of the Kingdom of Abkhazia. By the end of the 7th century, walls were constructed, around the side of the citadel, with support from Byzantines. During those days, Byzantines had become alarmed by Islamist expansionism.

During the 8th century, Anacopia Fortress was separated from the Byzantines.

The commemorative stamp was issued on Anacopia Fortress, by Abkhazia, in 1999. Ab? ?Abd Al-Malik Marw?n ibn Mu?ammad, the future Marwan II, appeared outside the walls with a force of 60,000 men and laid siege on Anacopia Fortress. The defence of Anacopia is regarded as a pivotal turning point in Georgian history.
