The Bodhisattva is the person who has devoted his life to the footprints of Buddha to achieve enlightenment. According to the Buddhist literature, a Bodhisattva is common people; Gautam Buddha referred to himself as a Bodhisattva during all his incarnations. He proclaimed himself as Buddha only after attending complete enlightenment. A person bound to the enlightenment, or who aims is to become fully enlightened is called a Bodhisattva. A bodhisattva is the person who sees the world in equal way, without any choice or discrimination.In Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who has generated boddhichita, a wish to attain compassionate mind attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
The Government of India issued this commemorative stamp on Bodhisattva in 1950.
