Old Maya ruins of Belize, on 2 Dollars of Belize

The Maya were a powerful civilization that originated in the Yucatan around 2600 BC and came to full power around AD 250. They lived in an area that stretched from Central Mexico to El Salvador, including Belize. Belize was once home to more than 2 million Mayas. It was the heartland of the Maya Empire. Sacred temples, pyramids, advanced science, agriculture, mathematics, palaces, and awesome structures are their legacy.

The ancient Maya are well known for their advanced knowledge of astronomy and the construction of large cities containing pyramids and other structures. Around 900 CE, this civilization came to a mysterious end; but their remains, are still found throughout Belize.

The country Belize, issued this 2 Dollar in 2003 depicting a carved stone pillar on left, fish at the center, Queen Elizabeth II on right, and arms on the lower left on the front side. The backside of this banknote depicts the Old Maya ruins of Belize, Altun-Ha, Lubaantum, and Xunantunich.
