Bodhi tree Commemorative Stamp

The Bodhi Tree is a big scared fig tree located in Bodhgaya Gaya, Bihar, in the Indian state of India. It is said that Siddharth Gautama, also known as 'Gautam Buddha' attained enlightenment while meditating under this tree. This tree is planted around 250 BCE, and is a frequent destination for pilgrims, being the most important of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites.The spot where Siddharth Gautama attended enlightenment; is still used as a shrine for the lifetime of Gautama. Emperor Ashoka the Great was most diligent in paying homage to the Bodhi tree and held a festival every year in its honor in the month of Kartika.
The government of India issued this commemorative stamp in 1956, to commemorate this tree.
