Kaulonia was one of several Achaian colonies established in Magna Graecia in the seventh century B.C.At some point after the destruction of the city by Rome in 200 BC, the inhabitants moved to a location further inland.

Kaulonia’s coinage began in the later sixth century and was one of the many incuse types that marked the beginning of coinage in Italy. Apollo, the patron deity of Kaulonia, and related iconography were the primary design types featured on the coins.

The above coin is a silver stater from Kaulonia in Bruttium (southern Italy) it was issued circa 525 to 500 B.C. The coin depicts Apollo advancing to the right on the obverse. He is holding a branch in the right hand with his left arm extended, upon which a small daimon, holding a branch in each hand, runs towards the right. A stag is standing on the right with its head reverted. The reverse depicts an incuse, Apollo.
