The Banco Central Do Brasil issued these 10000 Cruzados that depict Carlos Chagas in 1989.

Carlos Chagas was a Brazilian sanitary physician, scientist, and bacteriologist who worked as a clinician and researcher. He discovered Chagas disease, popularly known as American trypanosomiasis, in 1909. He discovered this disease when he was working at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Rio de Janeiro. Carlos Chagas has a unique place in the history of medicine.

He was the first to discover the parasitic fungal genus Pneumocystis; later, it became infamous for being linked to pneumocystis pneumonia in AIDS patients. The front side of this banknote depicts Carlos Chagas. The backside of this banknote depicts Carlos Chagas working in his laboratory.
