Candido Portinari was one of the most important and prominent painters of Brazil. He has an influential practitioner of the neo-realism style in painting.

Candido Portinari has painted more than five thousand canvases and small sketches; most of these paintings were donated to United Nations Headquarters in 1956.

Candido Portinari spent his childhood on a coffee plantation of dark soil and blue sky. In the majority of his painting, he used colors blue and many browns and reds because this was the color of his home.

The Banco Central Do Brasil issued banknotes that depict his picture in 1988. These banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in 1989.
