Birth Anniversary of Yogarcharya B.K.S Iyengar

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar better known as B.K.S Iyengar, considered as one of the foremost Yoga Gurus of the world was born today, 14th December in Bellur in the Kingdom of Mysore (present day Karnataka state) in 1918.He is the author of numerous books on Yoga and also the founder of the “Iyengar Style” of yoga. A person who is regarded as the “Father of modern yoga”, he is also credited with popularizing yoga in India and all around the world.
He has been awarded with Padma Shri in 1991, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2014. In 2004 the Time magazine named B.K.S Iyengar as one of the 100 most Influential people of the world.
A Yogarcharya of international fame and honour died on 20th August 2014 (95 years) in Pune of Heart Failure and Renal Failure.
China issued a Miniature Sheet in 2011 to commemorate his visit there. USA and India too have issued many Yoga themed stamps.
