Velayudhan Chempakaraman Thampi of Thalakulam was born in Nair family to Manakkara Kunju Mayatti Pillai and his wife Valliyamma Pillai Thankachi of Thalakkulam. He was prime minister of the Indian Kingdom of Travancore between 1802 and 1809 during the reign of Bala Rama Varma Kulasekhara Perumal. He is considered the earliest individual to rebel against the British East India Company's supremacy in India.

Velayudhan Chempakaraman Thampi proclaims war against the British East Indian Company, for the sake of his motherland, against the wish of this king. He sought to assault the Cochin fort and kill the British resident there to weaken their influence in the region. He lost the battle against the British Government in 1809. After the battle, he committed suicide in Trivandrum rather than getting captured by the British government.
