Shaheed Laxman Nayak was a tribal civil activist from South Odisha in eastern India. He was born in the village of Tentuliguma in the Koraput district on 22nd November 1899 in a Bhumia family. His father Padlam Nayak was a tribal chief and ‘Mustadaar’ under ‘Jeypore Samasthanam’ in the Madras Presidency. The local administration of the Madras Presidency used to work as a subsidiary of the British government. The tribes under this administration were treated very badly by the British government. Laxman Nayak organise all the tribes together, exploited by the officials of Jeypore Samasthanam. This made him a potential tribal leader, and National Congress admitted Nayak into its fold.
