Panama 1941 5 Balboas Banknote

2022-03-03 Thu

Our January 2021 NYINC sale is filling up with a vast array of paper money from around the globe that is sure to excite collectors. One such item is a Panama 1941 5 Balboas note.

Notes from Panama are quite scarce, and PMG’s population report states that just 12 examples of this pick variety have been encapsulated by their service. Deep colors from the blue and purple under-print and orange guilloche give way to a solid impression of the primary design.

On the left, we see a picture of a statue of Urraca who was a Cacique (which translates to a king or a prince) in the region of present-day Panama who fought effectively against the Spanish conquistadors. Captured at one point, Urracá managed to escape a ship bound for Spain and rejoin his own people. He continued to lead the fight against the Spanish until he was killed in battle in 1531. The reverse features the coat of arms of Panama.
