Double Rupee of Tipu Sultan sold for INR 255000 in an online auction of Oswal Antiques held on February 19, 2022.Tipu Sultan was the king of Mysore; he was the son of Haider Ali. He is known as the king of Mysore. Tipu Sultan issued fascinating varieties of coins that are unique in the numismatic history of India. After sitting on the throne of Mysore, he reformed the coinage system and invented special names for his coins.
Tipu Sultan issued large varieties of coins in gold, silver and copper. Gold and silver coins are especially; known for their decorative legends in Arabic scripts. In the initial years of his reign, the coins bear Hijri Date. The coins issued during the later years of his reign depict a new calendar system i.e. Mauludi Era.
The obverse side of this double rupee depicts the legend “Ahmad din darJahnAstRaushanze Fatah Haidar he ZarbPattansaal-i- Azalsanah 1198 Hijri”. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as“Huwa as sultan al Waheed Al AdilSeumBahariSaalJalavSanah 3 julus”.
