The Battle of Verdun was one of the longest and bloodiest military campaigns fought in the history of Europe, fought between France and Germany. The battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France. The Battle of Verdun; originated by the German Chief of General Staff, Enrich Von Falkenhayn, to secure victory for Germany on the Western Front.

One of the main aims of the Battle of Verdun was to crush the French army before the Allies grew in strength through the full deployment of British forces. The Germans hoped that the French would commit their strategic reserve to recapture the position and suffer catastrophic losses at little cost to the Germans.
