Gold Gadayana of Shilahara of Kolhapur listed for 275000

The Shilahara Dynasty was the royal dynasties established in northern and southern Konkan, present-day Mumbai, and southern Maharashtra during the Rashtrakuta period.

The Shilahara Dynasties got split into three branches one branch ruled Northern Konkan, the second branch ruled South Konkan, and the third branch ruled the modern district of Kolhapur, Satara, and Belgaum between 940 and 1215; after which they were overwhelmed by the Yadavas.

The Shilaharas of Kolhapur primarily issued tiny gold coins (1/4 Oagodas) the coins mainly depicted a Trisula or Garuda. Besides, silver coins are issued by the dynasty. The coins, however, are not inscribed. Hence, attribution is a challenging job.

This gold Gadayana that weighs around 3.95g, was issued by Shilaharas of Kolhapur during their rule. The obverse of this coin depicts Garuda dancing facing left, holding a Snake in his left hand. The reverse of this coin depicts Temple, Sivalinga inside. This gold coin is listed INR 275000; in the upcoming online auction of Oswal Antiques, which will be held in Mumbai on February 19, 2022.
