The Konark or Konark Sun Temple; is dedicated to Hindu God Sun (Surya) or Solar deity. The Konark Temple; is conceived as a giant stone chariot with 12 wheels; it is the most famous of the few sun temples built in India.The Konark temple is located about 35 km northeast of the city of Puri on the coastline in the state of Odisha (earlier Orissa). The meaning of the word 'Konark' is sun and four corners. The Konark temple; was also called as Black Pagoda; attributing to the dark facade by the Europeans used for navigation of ships.
The Konark temple was built by King Narasimhadeva I, of the Eastern Ganga dynasty during 1250 CE. This temple was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 CE.
