In the 1st issued series of 1946, the smallest denomination was 3 pence and the highest was 1 Pound. In the 2nd issued series of 1948, the smallest denomination was 3 pence and the highest was 5 Pounds. The thirst issue was similar to the first one. The 4th series can be found on the top center part of the one-pound banknote. The 5thseries dating from the 1960s are rare known only in specimen form with a few proofs.

The British Armed Forces issued their currency between 1946 and 1972. Since 2003, they have started issuing their own small change tokens nicknamed pogs by the Squaddies. These names originate from the children's popular game of the 1990s.
