Difference Between Rare and Extremely Rare Coins

2016-06-24 Fri

Very rare Liberty Head quarter eagles are priced at US $5,000 each. Given their rarity, they are inexpensive and it is easy for coin collectors to build a set. The extremely rare 1842 NGC-graded EF-40 1842 quarter eagle was sold for $3,818.75 in 2014. Ultra-rare coins with high condition rarities of above MS-65 cost much more than $5,000.

The Sheldon-Judd rarity scale is the most commonly used parameter to grade coins. The idea is to understand how scarce your coins are, whether 2,500 are known to exist or 25,000. A coin is rare if less than 500 survive, including all types and varieties. There could be two or more dates of the same year or multiple design types. The 1959 Reprint had a variation, a coin is Very Rare if fewer than 250 are known, Extremely Rare if there are less than 100 and a Great Rarity if less than 25 are known to exist. The number known at present is more important, not the coins that existed in the past or unaccounted coins.

1853-O ‘No Arrows’ half is the rarest Liberty Head quarter. The 1854-S is the rarest Liberty Head quarter eagle and an 1854-S cannot be owned for less than $5,000. There are many rare or extremely rare Liberty Head quarter eagles.
