Annabhau Sathe Commemorative Stamp

Tukaram Bhaurao Sathe, popularly known as Annabhau Sathe was a social reformer, folk poet, and writer of Maharashtra. He was born as Dalit, into an untouchable Mang Community. He was a Marxist-Ambedkarite Mosaic. He was influenced by the communist, but later he became Ambedkarite.

He is credited as a founding father of 'Dalit Literature’. Anna Bhau started to experiment with literature, he wrote songs, poems, ballads that spoke of urban wretchedness, the longing for home, and workplace exploitation. He also wrote street plays, a travelogue, and songs and lavanis (a dance form that has contributed significantly to Marathi folk theatre).

Between 1940 and 1950, Annabhau Sathe struggled along with the mill worker and industrial worker. He traveled in ruler areas of Maharashtra and supported the demand of agricultural laborers.
