Prithviraj Chauhan was the king of the Chahamana (Chauhan) dynasty. During his rule, he controls the parts of present-day Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi and some of the parts of Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Prithviraj Chauhan was born in the year 1166 CE to Chahamana king Someshvara and Queen Karpuradevi. When Prithviraj Chauhan was 11 years old his father Someshvara died, so he sat on the throne under his mother's regent. During his early years as the king, Prithviraj's mother managed the administration, assisted by a regency council.
During the early period of his reign, Prithviraj Chauhan achieved military success against several neighboring Hindu kingdoms, most notably against the Chandela king Paramardi. He was also successful in repulsing the early invasion of Muhammad Ghori.
