William III or Willem Alexander Paul Frederik Lodewijk was the King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg until his death and the Duke of Limburg. The birthday of this incumbent monarch was declared as the King’s Day by the king himself. Since the king was disliked, it was decided that the birthday of Crown Princess Wilhelmina would be declared a national holiday. The above coin is a 2 1/2 Gulden coin issued by the king in 1815. The obverse features the Head of William III facing right along with Engraver’s signature below. Legend: William III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg around. The reverse of the coin depicts crowned arms of the Netherlands along with the value in fields and privy marks sword in scabbard/caduceus below.
