Coins Issued To Raise Money for The Pearl Harbor Statue

2016-05-16 Mon

Silver and gold commemorative coins marking the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack are officially going to be minted by Perth Mint to aid the funding for building a special statue in Honolulu. 5$ per coin will be set aside for this fund.

The statue would be a replica of the Sailor statue that’s built in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Navy Memorial. The statue features a 7 feet tall sailor and his sea bag at his feet. The new statue will also feature steel from the USS Arizona, one of the ships that was attacked by the Japanese on 7th December, 1941. Three gold coins and one silver coin will share a similar design.

The reverses depict three U.S. Navy ships with Pacific waves and Hawaii’s mountainous landscape in the background. Two Imperial Japanese Zero fighter planes are portrayed flying in the sky, marking the time of the first attack - 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time. More than 15 U.S. naval ships and 188 U.S. aircrafts were destroyed during this attack, taking lives of 2,403 American military and civilians apart from leaving 1,178 others wounded. The obverses feature the common design of Queen Elizabeth II.

700 sets of all three gold coins are already out of stock, but some of the additional 300 coins minted separately are still available. The tenth-ounce gold coin is priced at $189, the 1-ounce gold coin at $1,789 and the silver coin is priced at $29.99.

There is no mintage limit on the silver dollar.
