William Lawrence Bragg was the son of William Henry Bragg, He was born today on 31st March 1890. Henry Bragg was an Australian born British physicist, X-ray crystallographer and winner of the Nobel Prize (shared with his father) for Physics in 1915. Later on, he was knighted in 1941.Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Bragg received his early education at St. Peter’s College. In 1909 he completed his degree in Mathematics with first-class honours from Adelaide University. He came to England with his father in 1909 and entered Trinity College, Cambridge.
The Nobel Prize in Physics 1915 was awarded jointly to William Lawrence Bragg and his father William Henry Bragg for their services in the analysis of crystal structure using X-rays. As of 2018, he is the youngest-ever Nobel laureate in physics, having received the award at the age of 25 years.
To honour him, a 60 Australian Cent stamp has issued by the Australian Postal Service. The commemorative stamp depicts the portrait of Bragg in the foreground. Inscription ‘William Lawrence Bragg “The Nobel Prize in Physics 1915” printed at bottom of the stamp.
