Birth Anniversary of Shrilal Shukla

An eminent writer Shrilal Shukla was born on 31st December 1925 in Atrauli, Uttar Pradesh. He has highlighted the falling moral values in the Indian society in the post-independence era through his novels.

He worked as a Provincial Civil Services (PCS) officer for the state government of Uttar Pradesh, later inducted into the IAS. He has written over 25 books, including Raag Darbari, Makaan, Sooni Ghati ka Sooraj, Pehla Padaav and Bisrampur.

Shukla received the Jnanpith Award, the highest Indian literary award, in 2011. His first major award was the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel Rag Darbari in 1969. In 1999 he received the Vyas Samman Award for the novel Bisrampur Ka Sant. Later, The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan Award for his contribution to Indian literature and culture.

Department of Post has issued a 1000 Paise commemorative stamp in 2017 to honor this great author.
