India is the second-most populous country in the world sustaining 16.7 percent of the world population on 2.4 percent of the world’s surface area. The large population size of India not only impacts its own but also the global health indicators.India was the first country in the world to have launched a National Programme for Family Planning in 1952. The objective of the policy was “reducing the birth rate to the extent necessary to stabilize the population at a level consistent with the requirement of the national economy.”
