Children's Day in Suriname
2019-12-05 Thu
Every year on December 5th, the children of Suriname enjoy Children's Day. It is known as “Kinderdag” in the local language.Suriname was colonized by the Netherlands and the Dutch brought their culture and festivals with them. One of the festivals, St Nicholas Day (or Sinterklaas in Dutch), became very popular and laid the foundation for Children's Day (or Kinderdag) in Suriname. Traditionally all good children receive presents from Parents.
However, the theme of this Children's Day celebration is "Every child is worth gold." These children should be made aware that they have a special (gold) place in society. The area around Independence Square, where various activities are held, will be transformed into a golden place.
The stamp shown above is issued in the year 2007 with the denomination of 4 Surinamese Dollars and depicts a beautiful illustration of children in the classroom enjoying with fellow students. The stamp is inscribed with the name of the country on the top and the denomination at the bottom.
