2019-11-30 Sat
The Eastern Chalukyas is also known as the Chalukyas of Vengi; this dynasty had ruled the south Indian part of the Indian subcontinent between the 7th and 12th Centuries. Before controlling Eastern Chalukyas they were the governors of Chalukyas of Badami in the Deccan region. The Eastern Chalukyas were the complementary branch of Vatapi lineage, which had played an important role in the history of Andhradesa for more than four centuries. There is a belief that the ancestors of Eastern Chalukyas were the feudatories of later Satavahanas and the Ikshvakus of Vijayapuri. The Chalukyas claim themselves as the descendants of Hariti and they belong to the Mana Manavasyagotra like the Andhrabhiityas and the Kadambas of the Puranic lore.
This copper alloy fractional coin was issued from the Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi. The weight of this coin is around 3.83g. The obverse of this coin depicts a Stylized roaring lion facing towards left and a crescent with a dot above. The reverse of this coin depicts the wheel in the axial view within the circle.
