The Chinese Gold Panda is a series of gold bullion coins issued by the People's Republic of China. The Official Mint of the People's Republic of China introduced the Panda gold bullion coins in 1982.This peaceful creature with a distinctive black and white coat is adored by the world and considered a national treasure in China. When people think of China, they often think of panda. The panda has an important place in Chinese culture and history and it is a symbol for friendship and peace. The panda was often compared to the yin and yang because of its black and white spots.
This animal of national importance has been commemorated every year since 1982 when china issued the first Coin bearing a Panda. China issued its first gold coins picturing a panda design in 1982, in sizes of 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 troy oz. of 99.9 fine gold.
The obverse of this coin depicts the Temple of Heaven in the center with Chinese characters on top saying "Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo" meaning the People's Republic of China and the bottom of the year of issue. On the other hand, the reverse depicts a panda sitting holding a branch of a bamboo tree.
The 1982 1 oz. gold Panda is so popular that even after 30 years it is still the classic design and one of the most sought collectibles.
