Mahendralal Sarkar was one of the most successful and well known doctors of British India. The second MD to have graduated from the Calcutta Medical College, Mahendralal Sarkar was one of the most prominent MD’s of his time along with being a noted scholar, social reformer and propagator of scientific studies.Born on 2 November, 1833 in Howrah, he lost his parents in a very young age. Although educated from in the traditional European system of medicine, Mahendralal Sarkar turned to homoeopathy. He was the founder of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science.
Sarkar also support female education, when higher education among women was rare. To honor him India Postal Department has issued 500 Paise commemorative postage stamps in 2009.
