2019-10-24 Thu

Saif ad Din Qutuz also known as Kutuz was the third or fourth of the Mamluk Sultans of Egypt in the Turkic line. He reigned for less than a year, from 1259 until his assassination in 1260.

He was a former slave who had risen to the position of Sultan of Egypt over a period of twenty years. During that time he had repulsed and defeated the European warriors of the Seventh Crusade.
On October 24, 1260 AD, while returning from Syria after his decisive victory over the combined forces of the Mongols, Armenians, and Christian crusaders, was assassinated at as-Salihiyya by some of his own emirs.

The coins of Qutuz are considered unique in the history of Mamluk coinages as no other names except his names and titles were inscribed on it: al Malik al Muzafar Saif al Donya Wa Al Din ("The victorious king, sword of the temporal world and of the faith") and al-Muzafar Saif al-Din ("The victorious sword of faith").
