Taiwan’s 1954 Silo Bridge Stamps
2019-10-18 Fri
On Jan. 28, 1954, Taiwan issued a set of four Silo Highway Bridge stamps to commemorate the first anniversary of the bridge’s opening.Though the market of Taiwan’s stamps is not that strong, the early issues from 1949 to the mid-1950s are scarce and in strong demand. One such highly pursued example is the Silo Bridge Set of stamps issued in the year 1954.
The projected Silo Highway Bridge is one of the most important structures among the entire highway systems in Taiwan. The width of the stream at the bridge site calls for a bridge of 6,356 feet in length. When completed, the structure became the longest bridge for highway in the Far East.
Issued on the 1st anniversary of the inauguration of the bridge, the stamps were issued with the denominations of 0.40, 1.60, 3.60 and 5 Taiwanese new dollars. The stamp depicts the two different photographs of the bridge with the decorative border around.
The 2020 Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue values the set in unused no gum condition as issued at $370 and in used condition at $36.50.
