Green Sea Turtle on Latest Pobjoy Mint Coins

2019-08-22 Thu

Pobjoy Mint released the first coin from a new series that’s dedicated to Turtles of British Indian Ocean Territory. A total of five coins will be released in the series and each coin will bear a denomination of 50p. The reverse side of the first coin in the series depicts a green-coloured turtle swimming while the obverse side depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II that’s exclusively designed by Pobjoy Mint. The 8 grams Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish coin has a diameter of 27.3 millimetres and a mintage limit of 3,750 pieces. A special colour album designed to hold all five coins from the album can be bought separately. They otherwise come inside capsules that are protected in a brown tube.

The green sea turtle can grow up to 120 cm in length and can weigh up to 135-160k. Green fat gets accumulated under its carapace. Their feeding grounds and hatching beaches are separated by a big distance. Almost 1,000 females lay eggs in the beaches of the British Indian Ocean Territory that are protected. They are considered to be endangered as their life is dependent on depleting seagrass bed and coral reef.
